🤧 Take a minute to read this. Written by my friend and staff member at the Animal Care Center I visit often. 🙏🏻 “I tell fellow co-workers who are burnt out, frustrated and hurting, When one more gets euthanized. When we are out of room, When a dog has been sitting for months with zero interest. When you see a dog deteriorate in a kennel, despite best efforts. When the intake window is non-stop and the adoption gate is silent. When people no show for their adoption appointments. I just say, But we do what WE can do. We each have gifts and limitations. We can't be expected to save everyone. It is not possible nor realistic. But we CAN make a difference with so many. We can be what that dog looks forward to, day in and day out, as he waits in his kennel for that 30 second visit through the kennel door. We can be that one hugging her on the table when her time is up, giving her one last bowl of wet food or taking her to the grass to feel it once more and go potty on her last walk. We can fill that extra few minutes of free time taking the dog out to the play yard to stretch and decompress, or update his profile photo so some of his personality can shine through on website and pique someone's interest. We can spend those extra minutes at intake to comfort that dog whose world was just shattered and is now in a strange place surrounded by strangers. We can talk and handle them compassionately even when its hot, your are overloaded with work and the dog is being difficult. When a dog is so scared its a danger to you or the public or itself and it must be ketch-poled you can handle her firmly but still gently. You can sit the petrified Chihuahua's kennel, not paying attention to him and let him see you aren't out to "get" him and he may just come crawl into your lap. You can close doors and guillotines gently. Well I said more than anticipated and now that I am all teary I will be done with my quasi-soap box inspirational. Keep up the good fight!
