Our next project is timeless for more than one reason. It’s a beautiful historic brownstone with classic details that we had so much fun restoring, but we also finished it about 2 years ago and only photographed it this year! #TheGatesHouse is a 3 story brownstone in Bedstuy. She was in really bad condition before the project started. The woodwork was all slathered in paint, the plaster was decaying and falling from the ceiling, and the stained glass transoms above the front parlor windows were painted over thick! You don’t even want to know about the kitchens and bathrooms! 🤯 The plaster mouldings and reliefs were repaired @thegateshouse. Molds were taken so parts could be replaced as needed. Ceiling medallions were repaired and restored. When we stripped the woodwork in this house we were shocked to see how beautiful the wood was underneath. Many of the doors were walnut which is a rare find in Brooklyn! The staircase was leaning to one side and covered in linoleum, so we jacked it up straight, put in new steel to support it, and replaced all the treads and risers while saving the original banister. Not everything was salvageable unfortunately. The original floors were badly damaged and although we tried didn’t take well to sanding. They were also crooked and since they were different in some rooms it broke up the space. We ended up pulling them all up, sistering the joists to level, and laying new white oak on a diagonal with a Peruvian walnut inlay. We also replaced a fireplace mantle that was removed in the back parlor that would become the new kitchen. A couple of walls were removed to make way for an expanded kitchen, a primary bathroom was added and a new custom front door. There are many other small details you have to see!
