My daughter and I were struck by ‘In the Black Fantastic’ @hayward.gallery. We sat and watched Kara Walker’s film gripped by her brutal charismatic paper silhouette characters. My youngest pondered on Tabita Rezaire moving image captured in a pyramid reminding us of truths about difference.
Ellen Gallagher has always been a favourite of mine, her ability to draw is mind blowing, lifelike but also otherworldly. The 18th Century portrait, a specimen of a black man sits brilliantly uncomfortable amongst her work. Lina Iris Viktor’s paintings mixing up the past with present. Wangechi Mutu’s film ate up the screen, so powerful and prophetic of humankind’s over consumption.
I hoped for some dialogue between the artists - a sense of conversations on themes - I suppose my daughter and I made these by examining our own thoughts on identity, the normative concepts of masculine and feminine, myth, scifi, feminism, fluid gender, social constructs of race and gender stereotypes. We talked it all. As it says in the catalogue - which is excellent - “the artists in this exhibition reimagine the ways in which we represent the past and future." Mostly it is just black fantastic. #blackfantastic #visitingexhibitionswithteenagers #art #mustseeexhibition #makesyouthink #fillsyouin #myth #scifi #redefine
