Kpaŋbili, a tropical spinach from the Amaranth (Aleefu) family, is known in English as "silver cock's comb" and is called "Lagos spinach" in Nigeria. This resilient plant produces attractive flowers that house its seeds, which spread naturally as the blooms mature. Like Aleefu, Kpaŋbili is widely used in stews and soups, but it was actually more popular among our grandparents, who valued it for its flavor and versatility in cooking. When we visited a local farm, the owner shared that he hadn’t planted Kpaŋbili this year. Instead, seeds from last season fell to the ground, and with the rains, they germinated and flourished on their own. This ease of growth highlights the advantages of indigenous crops like Kpaŋbili, which require minimal effort and no chemical fertilizers to thrive. In addition to its ease of cultivation, Kpaŋbili is packed with health benefits. It’s a rich source of vitamins A and C, which support immune health, and is also high in iron, which promotes healthy blood. Its high fiber content aids digestion, while its antioxidants help protect cells from damage. Adding Kpaŋbili to your diet is an easy way to enjoy both delicious flavors and a nutritional boost. #AfriFOODlinks #ThroughFood #FOOD2030EU #OurFoodStories #ByYouth #OurFutureOurPerspective #OurFutureOurVoices #YouthIncluded #YouthInIt #FoodFuture #TheFutureIsFood
