Been counting my blessings lately just wanted to share here how excited I am to be included in @aperturefnd’s exhibition “A New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art & Fashion” as it tours internationally! Curated by @sirsargent who I am so grateful to for including me. It’s insane to think my work has already been shown at galleries, museums and photo festivals worldwide, from Qatar to France, Switzerland and now at @fotografiska in Stockholm 🥲 As someone who’s career is multifaceted and being that I also work on a lot of more commercial and “content” type or projects as a creative director, being an artist simultaneously who is just trying to express themselves, I feel like imposter syndrome is so real. The balance between making work for you vs for others is hard to maintain and the work is so personal and tender that for me that sometimes it doesn’t always feel like it would necessarily resonate with anyone BUT me. Moments like this - seeing my work amongst so many incredible artists that I admire and look up to - is so validating as an image maker. As a documenter of our beautiful black and brown people. As an artist. It’s such an honour (and kind of mind blowing) to think people are engaging with something I made just for me, IRL, all over world.. alongside so many of my peers and inspirations.. in a museum of art no less ! Having just turned 29 I’ve been reflecting a lot on my artistic journey and how far I’ve come. It’s surreal because I feel as though I am literally living the dreams I imagined 10 years ago. I’m so proud of me and so excited for where I’m going yalll 🥲🥲 Anyway, the New Black Vanguard’s last stop is the @saatchi_gallery this October, a place I’ve visited since I was a teenager seeking inspiration. It’s going to be a pinch me moment to see it there for sure. And a testament to a decade of following in my grandfathers footsteps and pursuing my passion with every ounce of my being. 💛 grateful to all of you who have supported my journey thus far 🙏🏾
