Last week, after 13 years of demobilising pain, fainting, vomiting, missed periods, and dismissive doctors I finally had clarity that ‘I wasn’t making this up’ and had surgery for my Endometriosis.
The Endometriosis was removed from around and behind my cervix, my ovaries, and up to my bowel, my left ovary was released after it was being pulled down by the endometriosis, a cyst was removed off my right ovary and my appendix was removed.
We’re conditioned to not talk about it, and it makes us believe that the pain is normal. When truly it’s not and because of this, I put off this surgery for far too long.
- Endometriosis is found in 1 - 9 women.
- Majority of women are undiagnosed because we suffer in silence, and are led to believe it’s just a bit of pain.
- Endometriosis is in the top 20 most painful conditions in the world, alongside breaking a bone and heart attack.
- Globally, women continuously put off this surgery because it is still labelled “elective”, costing thousands of dollars.
Thank you to my family and friends, for my cards, flowers, food, books, texts, calls, lols and @stephentimberlake for being my MVP for holding me up when I couldn’t hold myself, brushing my hair, showering me, changing my clothes and being so god damn supportive.
This post is essentially me sharing my learnings and my mistakes for not prioritising my own health, and hope this raises awareness of knowing the pain is not normal and to go get it checked.
