The Countdown for Kids campaign is making headlines across the country, and CTV News released a deeply troubling report about the rise of AI exploitation targeting children. The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit is sounding the alarm 🚨 “AI is moving at leaps and bounds,” said Staff Sgt. Mark Auger. “The numbers are only increasing every year.” The Alberta ICE unit now receives over 3,000 files a year — just for the half of Alberta south of Red Deer. Auger warns that while some youth may think it’s “just a joke” to use AI to create fake n*de or s*xualized images of their peers, the consequences are real and devastating. What starts as a prank can quickly become exploitation, bullying, extortion — or worse. This is exactly why we launched Countdown for Kids yesterday. AI harms are accelerating. Children are being targeted faster than law enforcement can keep up. And parents are being left to manage risks they should never have to face alone. We need the Government of Canada to reintroduce the Online Safety Act before December 31 — and give children the protections they urgently need. 👉 Take action: www.countdownforkids.ca Sign the Call to Action.
