For being land creatures, our (enduring) impulse to create water dwellings fascinates me. From Paul Maymont’s 1960 Floating City for the Bay of Tokyo to today’s floating city prototypes for climate change (last image), they seem to get more elaborate as the decades roll on. Pictured here is Schoonschip, a sustainable floating neighborhood experiment in Amsterdam grounded in a participatory approach that thinks about a future on, and in stewardship of, the waterways that define this city.
