Toasted pain au levain topped with a big swath of miso butter, some things from my garden (tomatoes, purple basil, zinnias, and nasturtium petals), and some salt flakes and ground pink peppercorns to finish. It’s like a #butterboard where the “board” is a piece of toast. (Inspired by @adamliaw)
To make the miso butter I like to combine a good quality butter at room temp with mellow white miso, at roughly the ratio of 1 part miso to 2 parts butter. The result is an umami-rich spread that is so good on toast, or for cooking into fried rice or garlic noodles.
Sadly this is the very last of my “little Sicily” tomatoes—a little bush of a tomato plant that is perfect for growing in containers. Other plants are coming to the end of their time too, but somehow my sungold tomato plant is still going strong; in the summer it managed to grow up and over the top of its tomato cage and all the way back down the side and there are lots of little tomatoes on it that I’m hoping will ripen.
How is your garden doing? Do you garden in colder months? I typically take a break from gardening for this half of the year but this time I’ve planted some peas and maybe I will sow some seeds for leafy greens and see what happens.
