This photograph is from a powerful 1995 series titled “From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried” by Carrie Mae Weems, which highlights Black American history with text etched on glass over red-toned black and white prints. The musical notations and lyrics on this image are sandblasted on the glass that is layered over the portrait of a young Black girl. The etched musical notes leave faint shadows on the print as the girl in the image eyes us over the top of the music. The notes are from the song titled “God Bless the Child,” famously recorded by Billie Holiday in 1941. Can you imagine this song playing while viewing this photograph? What do you hear when you see this photo? It is one of the photographs currently on view in the In Focus: Sound exhibition through October 2.
