In memory, I wore my Jubilee slippers last night. We made them to commemorate our late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, in June this year. Special permission was granted by the Lord Chamberlain’s Office, for the Jubilee, to design special pieces of quality with The Queen’s EIIR cypher. It’s a signature that is so intrinsic to daily life in the UK, most of us having lived with this emblem all our lives, decorating our letterboxes, passports, and postal stamps, that we hardly notice it. I seized this rare opportunity and produced a limited edition of these velvet slippers to honour her long reign in service to us. I looked up the meaning of the word cypher - it means a secret signature, and all our rulers have had their own different cyphers through British history, so to wear these slippers today, at the beginning of a new reign, feels particularly poignant in this moment in history.
