To my friends, family, and fellow ocean advocates, I’m sure many of you already heard about my bike accident last week. I wanted to let you all know that I am on the path to recovery and doing better every day, in no small measure thanks to all the loving care my incredible husband @paulnicklen has given me. He truly is my hero. This incident has proved to be an important lesson in gratitude. I can’t remember the exact details of what happened, but I know that I was not wearing my helmet (stupid, I know) and I now have a concussion, a fractured vertebra and several other injuries. Even on a five-minute bike ride from the house, life can take unexpected turns. Thankfully I am healing quickly and jumping right back on the horse!
My family and I are incredibly grateful to the doctors, nurses, and paramedics at
Nanaimo General Hospital, who took such good care of me that night. We are especially thankful to the mysterious stranger who found me semi-conscious and bleeding on the side of the road, brought me and my bike home, called Paul using my phone, and disappeared into the night. All we know is your name, but we cannot thank you enough for bringing me home safely. So thank you, Ryan, whoever you are.
We were initially skeptical about what happened, assuming the worse, as many of us do in these situations. Was it a hit and run? A drunk driver? What is the worst thing that could have happened, and how long can we dwell on those horrible ideas? We’ve decided that this was simply an accident, and a kind person brought me home safely. This incident has taught us to be good to ourselves and others. Let us all take a moment to appreciate our health and the kindness of strangers! Next week I will be back to work, albeit a bit slower, and ready to save our oceans! #grateful #gratitude #hope
