Mōrena ki a koutou katoa it's #VivaDay!
If you have been one of the lucky people who have dined at MoVida in Melbourne @movidamelb (even if you had to wait more than an hour to get in, like our deputy editor @jothornton_ did) you will be thrilled at the news that the restaurant’s chef and owner Frank Camorra is opening a sister restaurant here in Auckland, @movidaakl.
We caught up with Frank last week while he was in town testing dishes - think Ortiz Cantabrian artisan anchovy on croutons with smoked tomato sorbet, and Jerusalem artichoke with lardo and Ōra King caviar.
“Frank says he’s going to present Spanish food through an Auckland filter, which means we’ll see dishes like slow-cooked pāua finished over wood and served with finger lime, pear and butter sauce. And while the restaurant’s Melbourne counterpart is tucked down a cobbled laneway, Aucklanders get to eat MoVida dishes with sea views from Britomart’s Seafarers Building, all with the same sense of vibrancy and fun. I can’t wait to visit,” says Johanna.
Also in town recently was the cellar master of Veuve Clicquot, Didier Mariotti, who spoke to our wine editor, Dr Jo Burzynska, about everything from the impact of climate change on the wines of Champagne to the demand for prestige cuvees despite the challenges of the last few years. If visitors like Frank and Didier are what opening the borders means for our hospitality industry, things can only get better.
