A fifth-generation San Franciscan whose maternal great-great grandparents came to the city during the Gold Rush, Margaret Jenkins has deep roots in the city. Having founded Margaret Jenkins Dance Company in 1973, so does her art-making.
Celebrating 50 years now, Jenkins’ company is preparing to present “Global Moves,” a milestone project involving far-flung creators from China’s Cross Move Lab, India’s Tanusree Shankar Dance Company and Israel’s Kolben Dance Company. Jenkins has worked with each before, contrasting their distinct styles with her dancers’ own precise, concentrated aesthetic in works since 2006. But this is the first time the artists from all four countries have worked together.
“She wants people to invent — that’s her legacy,” said Joe Goode, a star dancer for Jenkins in the 1980s who went on to become an equally lauded choreographer. “She wants to create an environment that is a laboratory, the idea that we’re in there doing alchemy.
“She’s got all that glamorous long hair and those elegant hands — there’s a bit of a diva there — but at bottom she’s incredibly generous and democratic.”
