There are some days that stand at the edge of time, look down at you, below and above memory, all senses. All other days are relics of these days. Sometimes these are the days in which something is produced, you have something to show for them, but the thing that was made can not contain their essence fully, can not produce repetition. The day Raja, Laura, and I made the video for “Come on Kiki” was one of those days. This video a vestige of friendship and respect for the artists who continue to show us to ourselves. Raja and I were were standing on the porch, waiting to go in the house for the first scene. We were thinking about Kiki Smith and David Wojnarowicz entering Peter Hujar’s apartment after attending his memorial. We were thinking about our own bodies, our friendship, our futures and our fragility. We were thinking about what it is to love a friend beyond the present, beyond the living. We were thinking of our love for each other. Both warmth and a chill contained in all of this thinking. We opened the door and the story began. We danced alone and together to Joy Division, Chaka Khan, Maria Callas. We tied ourselves together in homage to Kiki Smith’s sculpture “Tied to Her Nature”. We stood at dawn with our legs buried to our shins in a field who’s trees had recently been felled in preparation for a golf course. Tuce Yasak made everything glow from within through lighting, much of which was made by hand of her own invention. “Come on Kiki” continues to expand as I play it each night, as it’s making was immortalized in print in my essay in the book “Listening in the Dark”, and now in this video we made early last spring. Raja cast as Kiki, myself as David, and Laura, in a way, cast as Peter, unseen but watching, both in the video’s making and through her beautiful edit.
