National Geographic recently featured the important work that Ambulance for Monuments is doing to rescue heritage-listed buildings in Romania on their Europe From Above series.
The stunning drone footage showcases the type of impressive work being carried out to restore hundreds of heritage buildings in the country. The project featured took place in September and October 2021 at the Church of Archangel Michael and Gabriel in the village of Gurasada in Romania’s Hunedoara county. Frescoes from as long ago as the 13th Century were being damaged by rain leaking through the roof of the medieval church, so more than 60 volunteers and five craftspeople worked to craft and replace the 60cm-long oak shingles, a rare type of traditional roof tile, with the support of Gurasada Town Hall, The Archiepiscopacy Of Deva and Hunedoara, Profi Romfood SRL, Dedeman SRL and the local community. The Ambulance For Monuments’ Nicoleta Marian co-ordinated the project.
With support from The Prince’s Foundation, Ambulance for Monuments was launched in 2016 and brings together talented craftspeople with a ready supply of tools, equipment and materials.
The initiative also trains young experts and craftspeople at a local level, ensuring the sustainable and future maintenance of the buildings, addressing a problem that is present not just in Romania but in many other countries throughout Europe.
