Sina’s Archway is a palm woven sculpture floating just above the ground suspended by a single fabric ribbon for balance. Sina and the eel is the origin story of the coconut throughout the Polynesian islands. The young king of Fiji falls in love with Sina and turns himself into an eel to swim to Samoa and be with her. There are many versions of the tale, all ending in his severed head being buried and sprouting the first coconut tree. For me the story has always been about desire, how we move through it- towards and away from it. The archway feels like a threshold. I’ve always desired to live a faithful artistic life. The Palm and it’s long history as a tool making material has helped me connect with this wanting, to see my own making as a part of our collective connection to land and life.
