When a Filipino family gathers for an event, they go all out on the menu. In the case of “Inay Dalisay’s World Famous Lechon,” Bindlestiff Studio’s first main-stage production since the beginning of the pandemic, it’s the titular lechon — a whole roasted suckling pig — that serves as the centerpiece. 🎭
Written by Bindlestiff Managing Director Oliver Saria, “Inay Dalisay” follows the Labis family through a succession of get-togethers — some happy, others sad, but always funny — where they reckon with individual and shared attitudes toward food. The idea for the play came prior to the pandemic, but it was written during the height of the COVID-19 outbreak and was further inspired by the emerging health issues within Saria’s community.
“We’ve had some friends die pretty young from health-related complications,” he said. “Our peers, in their 30s and 40s.”
Throughout its story, “Inay Dalisay” attempts to define health for the Filipino American community.
