"She doesn't even go here!" At the end of October, thousands of snow geese begin to flock to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. Although their numbers fluctuate yearly, by mid-November there could be as many as 40,000 snow geese at the refuge. Many migratory birds use the wetands at the refuge as a winter resting place. Other winter guests include the Ross's goose (which look almost identical to snow geese!), northern pintails (like the brown-headed fella in the photo), and over ten thousand sandhill cranes. Near dawn, the geese take off to search for food in the Middle Rio Grande Valley. Their numbers are so plentiful that these fluffy white birds can form flying flocks that momentarily block out the sun. #meangirlsday #birdfacts #damian Photo: Becky Kelher (sharetheexperience.org)
