“This photo was taken on my first return trip back to my hometown of Sacramento.
While my camera rarely comes out on visits like these it was my appreciation of local photographer Brian Johnson(in photo) @runningclocks style that impressed me. I took it as an opportunity to meet up with this young talent and see places I’ve seen hundreds of times over my life with fresh eyes. We met and walked through the midtown Sacramento area to Old Sacramento along the river getting acquainted. I knew I had to get at least one shot of Brian that morning in March but wasn’t sure where but knew it had to fall into place on its own. We walked by this restaurant that wasn’t open yet and the morning light and shadow falling on this wall stopped me in my tracks. The photos on the wall were the perfect touch giving the image so much more power I didn’t realize till after I developed. I took two shots right here with his “weapon” of choice and we continued on.
I have been living in the Los Angeles area now for a year now and while there is a growing resurgence with it I still only know a small handful that take it seriously so that makes it kind of special. Being in one of the biggest and most interesting cities in the world there is always opportunities to shoot something different and not get bored with the same scenery. Also there is so many film supply stores locally that is never a concern. I’m less likely to be messed with having an old film camera on me vs an expensive big digital camera. Truth is the camera whether it’s my 35mm or medium format will become an ice breaker and people will want their photo taken. On professional shoots I also bring one to mix it up with digital. I can deliver hundreds of digital shots edited and a roll or two of film straight from the lab and the film 9/10 will be a favorite of a clients.
This photo was taken with my Yashica Mat124G with my my black and white film of choice Ilford HP5.”
