It’s tough to cover such a well-known song! We’ve all been listening to the VU + Nico record for our whole lives. Matt and I wanted to give his version a similar energy, but with some different building blocks to hopefully add a new flavor (🍌?)... There’s that pounding 1/8th note piano part that just never stops. I figured you can’t do a cover of this song without some incessant rhythm. I had always wanted to try doing a prepared piano technique as made famous by John Cage. I figured Lou Reed would maybe approve? I stuffed some rubber mutes and fishing wire in the piano strings, made some janky loops, and built the song around those sounds...I think it turned out pretty cool! (swipe right.) I can’t wait to hear more VU covers by my favs @sharonvanhalen, @andrewbirdmusic , @iggypopofficial etc. Last but not least... This record was executive-produced by the late, great Hal Willner. One of my all time favorite producers who I was fortunate enough to meet a few times. He perfected the art of the tribute album... and continues to be a major inspiration.
