Born and raised in New York City, Joana Avillez has always found inspiration for her illustration work in observations of the city’s bustling energy, iconic sights, and unique characters. “I love seeing people being very much themselves, and coming out onto the street or into the world to do so,” she recalls. Her artistic eye also sees depths of creative potential in things others may not pay much mind to. On what she finds herself observing, she explains, “The ballet, but also the people attending the ballet.
