this is not freedom. what we need to ask every Republican, every NRA member, every Democrat who’s squeamish about gun reform, every single day: is this worth it to you? say it point blank. the price of protecting your selfish desire to hoard guns and bullets is dead children, dead parents, dead family members, over and over again. nowhere is safe, nowhere feels safe. tell us to our faces, on the record, that that is worth it to you. it’s so heartbreaking and nonsensical. we accepted limitations on the first amendment - the first! - ages ago, recognizing the responsibility to minimize harm to others while also protecting free speech. what makes the second amendment so sacrosanct? a sick culture and country that’s perverted the meaning of actual freedom. a sick obsession with weapons of murder. did you know we banned assault weapons once? the federal ban on semi-automatic assault weapons passed Congress in 1994 and expired in 2004. since then, we’ve been able to pass nothing significant. the political and public will has to be there - we’ve done it before, we can do it again. it’s not the end all be all solution, but it’s a fucking step in the right direction. this country is sick. spend your 4th and every day after trying to make it better.
