I found it hard to respond to the passing of Pharoah Sanders yesterday. @tomokisanders had sent me messages updating me on their dad’s stroke and state of health through the night, but the news still came as a shock close to the start of my @bbc6music show. 2022 has seen us lose many greats and some close friends too... booking Pharoah for @weoutherefest was always a gamble - he hadn’t performed for almost 3 years - there were always going to be obstacles to get him over to play - health, visas, travel issues etc but he was determined to be on that stage in Abbots Ripton. A few days before the due date we received word that he would be accompanied by Tomoki - I felt a sense of relief and excitement that everything would be alright. In the end those of us present experienced a show of heightened connection and emotion - one we will never forget. Pharoah Sanders’ impact is one of a kind - he touched us all. A memory - at the jazz bop in Brighton when Russ Dewbury asked him if he could play ‘you’ve got to have freedom’ Pharoah responded - all my songs are of freedom!
