Did you know? Low quality pearls can have very thin layers of their pearlescent coating — this means that they’re quick to harvest, but don’t have the depth of iridescent color shown in the video above. (Most importantly, they’re more prone to chipping and having their luster wear away.)
In contrast, our Tennessee River pearls take 3 years to grow. In this time, they develop a strong and thick pearlescent coating, made of many thin layers. The more layers a pearl has, the stronger the color and luster it holds.
