Kwasi Kwarteng's mini budget today is a complete failure for those of us hoping for any kind of meaningful financial help to get us through this winter. The Chancellor could have stood up today and announced straightforward policies to help people stay afloat this winter. Like increasing benefits in line with inflation, so they actually cover people’s bills and other rising costs. Or increasing the amount people will be receiving from cost-of-living-crisis payments, to make up for the shortfall in support people are facing. Instead, the UK government has completely failed to help those on the lowest incomes today. Financial stress is taking a huge toll on people's wellbeing. With no new funding, the mental health system isn't able to meet current demand, let alone during a winter when people are freezing and going hungry.
