The Most Unique Ryokan in Japan 🇯🇵✨ Some of my Japan videos recently went viral, so I wanted to share another amazing spot I love. This ryokan, founded in 1694, is believed to be Japan’s oldest surviving wooden hot spring inn. Located in Shima Onsen, Gunma, it’s over 300 years old and full of history, charm, and healing energy. The name Shima means “40,000 hot springs”, based on the ancient belief that these mineral-rich waters could cure 40,000 illnesses. Sekizenkan has 3 unique buildings: 🏯 Honkan (Main Building) – Built in 1691, it’s fully self-service and feels like stepping back into the Edo period. Tatami mats, sliding doors, wooden halls—this building and its tunnel are even said to have inspired Spirited Away. 🏛️ Sansou – Built in 1936, it blends Japanese tradition with Western design. It’s home to the Roman-inspired Genroku no Yu bathhouse and the serene outdoor Mori no Yu. Sansou is also a registered cultural property. 🌲 Kashoutei – The newest wing (1986), surrounded by pine trees and forest views. We stayed here and enjoyed incredible kaiseki dinners and Japanese breakfasts served in-room by nakai (traditional hostesses). It is a magical escape into Japan’s past, blending history, architecture, and onsen culture like nowhere else.📍Sima Onsen Sekizenkan Kashoutei 四万温泉 積善館 . . #onsen #ryokan #japan #japantiktok #japancountryside
