Does your child have meltdowns after school or childcare?
Imagine keeping yourself together all day, maybe at an office or for the kids at home, and then your partner comes through the door.
All of a sudden your emotions rush in and you want to vent. All of sudden your heart and mind are going a million miles an hour. Then all you want to do is vent, cry, or show anger. Everything that was keeping you together that day just collapses - that's restraint collapse.
Restraint collapse can be more common in children who are generally more sensitive and are bigger feelers. We all have different temperaments. I like to call it an emotional discharge.
The best thing you can do is meet them where they are and offer support. Don't rush to tell them to calm down or hush. Instead, let them express their emotions.
Also, some kids will get MORE triggered or frustrated if you try to hug them during a meltdown. Follow tip three as discussed in the video.
On my website, Pedsdoctalk.com, I go over how to reduce the chances of restraint collapse, what to do when it happens, and how to talk about it after.
Search "restraint collapse" on my website to read all about it.
