Almost one year ago, I announced my campaign for Georgia governor for the second time. To many, this came as a surprise. Why would I run again after a very public loss in 2018? What has changed between then and now that would make this race different?
To understand more fully, we have to go back to the story of my family. I am a daughter of the South - raised in Mississippi and came of age in Georgia. Faith, education and service were our family values – to put your head down, shoulder to the wheel and push as hard as you could to make life better for yourself and those you love. For my parents and millions of families, the deal was supposed to be simple. Put in a fair day’s work and receive a fair day’s wage. But the deal didn’t always turn out as it should and sometimes that wasn’t enough to keep the lights on and the water running in our house.
Each day, I think about the people I have met all across Georgia. Like my family, they wake up each day with a stubborn hope that more is possible. It’s a faith in the ethic of work and the equity of opportunity, a belief that we are each entitled to more.
For the past 4 years, even when the hardest time hit us all, I've worked to do my part to help families across our state make it through. I paid off the medical debt for 68,000 Georgians, expanded access to vaccines during COVID, installed 100+ internet stations in underserved communities and helped to keep jobs in Georgia when the current governor turned a blind eye to the film industry.
That's why I decided to run again. Because even when I didn't get the job, I did not hesitate for a second to do the work that is right and desperately needed for our people. 4 years have gone by, but I know that our values are still strong and Georgians are still holding on to hope. That despite years of unfulfilled promises and constant attacks on our freedoms, we know that there is nothing that can take away our right to demand more.
I'm asking you to believe again. Believe in yourself, in your voice, and in your vote. And when you go to the polls today, vote like your life depends on it, because it absolutely does.
