This abstract expressionist ceramic plate by Peter Voulkos is part of a curated selection of artworks at the LOEWE Rodeo Drive presented alongside our latest collections. Voulkos’ curation at Rodeo Drive recalls his importance to the local California area—notably, having established the ceramics department at UC Berkeley. With deep reverence for the integrity of his material, the artist takes cues from the clay’s natural characteristics, following its original lines and textures. Contrasting with traditional techniques of smooth pottery making and glazing, Voulkos preferred to work free-hand and with raw clay, and to render typically useful objects to be purely decorative ones adorned on the basis of the aesthetic. American-born and of Greek descent, Voulkos (1924-2002) is world-renowned for his radical methods of freely-formed abstract sculptures which are today representation in prestigious collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Metropolitan Museum of Art).
