Happy #hispanicheritagemonth from your fave mixed race gal. 🇹🇭 🇨🇱 🇺🇾 The world we live in is so obsessed with identity that it’s impossible to not adhere to it as well. Being mixed in America is complicated and I’ve struggled a lot with my identities around it and not feeling “enough”. But today (and every day) I’m proudly repping my Chilean and Uruguayan heritage. To be clear — I don’t speak Spanish. I don’t know a lot about either country. I’ve never been to Chile or Uruguay or South America. But that’s not what makes me who I am. I feel the connection to my community and my heritage, it’s a part of me no matter what anyone says. According to my DNA I’m a lot of everything. So when people ask me the dreaded “what are you” question, it’s hard not to get upset. Mostly because I truly don’t get why it matters “where I’m really from” but also I’m just a person of this world. My people are from all over this Earth and I’m happy with that answer. I’m all about transparency and wanted to share these results not to prove anything but to show how complex race can be. Here’s how you can celebrate Hispanic heritage this month and all the time: ✨ learn about the history of the holiday ✨ read, listen and watch Hispanic and Latinx media (docs, podcasts, music, films, books) ✨ support your local community, attend an event celebrating the holiday ✨ follow and support Hispanic and Latinx influencers and advocates ✨ Donate to Latinx or Hispanic nonprofits and community orgs ✨ Support Latinx or Hispanic businesses ✨ Tell Congress to create a pathway for our 11 million undocumented immigrants Photo by @brandonscottherrell for @topodesigns #diversifyoutdoors #outdoorasian #latinooutdoors #recreateresponsibly #shredthepatriarchy #mixedinamerica #mixedrace #colorado
