Drill rap has become one of the most popular and influential styles of music around today. For a few weeks me and the team dropped into the world of NYC Drill music. I’ll be honest...my old @ss didn’t really know what to make of Drill until we started digging. Being from the south that 808 bass coming through the speakers spoke to me. That plus the energy of the music and the artists creates a helluva auditory experience. The music is slappin but what stands out just as much is the violence and beef in the music. Being a Drill artist can be dangerous, with over 30 drill rappers murdered in 2021 alone. Some of these young cats out here talking about what they are gonna do, when they’re gonna do it and to who. Then they brag about it. This gets likes and leads to record deals. The paradox - They want to escape the violence of their surroundings and rapping about it (whether they are living it or not) is a gamble because it can lead to that very same violence.
