The German painter Rainer Fetting is perhaps best known for a series of nude portraits of his companion Ricky. Fetting came to prominence as one of the Berlin Neuen Wilden painters, along with artist colleagues Salomé and Helmut Middendorf, and helped revive the painting scene in the 1970s and 80s during a time in Germany when art production was primarily conceptual in nature. In the painting, Seerosen-Ricky (1983), Ricky is seen from behind, arms outstretched, and head buried in a suggestion of privacy. The painting is filled with expressive groupings of blue brushstrokes which resemble abstracted bouquets of flowers, or as the title indicates, water lilies. Rainer Fetting Seerosen-Ricky, 1983 Oil on canvas 230 x 170 cm Presented alongside Hans-Peter Feldmann’s plaster sculpture, “David” (2006), this painting is included in our group show, Other Images of Man, which features approximately sixty works by more than thirty artists produced from the 1960s to today. This multi-generational survey explores figuration in painting, photography, sculpture, and video, that expands and upends earlier representations of masculinity and the male form.
