22.09.2022 // OPENHAUS SEPTEMBER 2022 // EMILY THOMAS Outside In / Downside Up // Emily is investigating the privatisation of 6 Berlin Modernism UNESCO Housing Estates (Hufeisensiedlung, Gartenstadt Falkenberg, Schillerpark-Siedlung, Wohnstadt Carl Legien, Weiße Stadt & Ringsiedlung Siemensstadt). In relation to her research on gentrification & social housing, she is exploring the contradictions & lack of transparency surrounding these buildings that are celebrated today for their major positive impact on social reform in the 1920s. With 4 of these estates now under the ownership of the capitalistic housing company Deutsche Wohnen, it seems that these buildings are having the opposite impact today. In the upcoming OPENHAUS, Emily will share her research & sculptures in progress.
