Have you heard of the Solar Do-Nothing Machine? This intriguing contraption was designed for the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) in the late 1950s by none other than Charles and Ray Eames, the legendary husband-and-wife design duo.
Its only purpose was to showcase the virtues of aluminum as a material, but in reality, the machine was something of a breakthrough: It was indeed one of the first devices to convert solar energy to electricity (and a testament to the Eameses’ belief that ‘toys and games are the prelude to serious ideas’).
Nearly forty years later, the Eameses’ grandson, Eames Demetrios (@eamesdemetrios) produced this short film from unedited footage of the machine and it’s a joy to watch. (We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!)
