"Don’t you believe that love is more than dues? More than “I do-s? How can it be true that love is locks—when love has always been a ring of keys?"
In the playwright’s experience, coming out as asexual is synonymous with educating on asexuality. Coming out means detaching from the body, from the feelings, and firmly guiding someone into treating you with decency. In All We Can Do Is Trust, Tia and Jule are cross-continental asexual partners facing an Immigration meeting next week that – as partners who’ve never dated, never had sex, don’t kiss – they know is doomed. Tia and Jule assemble the audience to ask a favour of them; and to get there, they will educate, yes, but they will also problematize and wonder and explore and connect. Moving through poetry and prose, they will challenge what makes a relationship, what makes queerness, and who gets to define love.
