Is an electric ferry the ferry of the future? 🧐 Electric boating has become quite popular as they are an appealing alternative to conventional engines powered by diesel or gasoline. 🚤 Earlier this summer, Sweden made a splash announcing that electric ferries in Stockholm would soon be commuting passengers to and from the nearby island of Ekerö. 🇸🇪 With the rising fuel prices surging, 📈 one might wonder when electric ferries will be docking on Nantucket. We got insight into a study commissioned by the Steamship Authority on whether or not it’s possible for Nantucket to implement! 🌊 At this point, the Steamship Authority is exploring the feasibility of operating electric ferries, but the possibility of implementing such technology on Nantucket seems like a distant dream. 💭 All-electric ferries would require significant capital investment both for new vessels and the infrastructure to support them, and would be far more feasible on the Steamship’s Martha’s Vineyard route than on the Nantucket route due to the greater distance involved. ⛴ There are various questions to consider if electric ferries were to be implemented on Nantucket.
