Alright, going grid for this:
In 2010, I started a Tumblr called DateByNumbers. At the heyday of my dating adventures, I had 5000 subscribers and a book deal. I was working in advertising during the day and writing that blog (mostly) at night. But when the book came out, I was dating someone who really shamed me for my experiences. I didn’t celebrate the book, I didn’t promote it, and I really let the whole thing kind of... die. It’s my biggest personal regret.
NOT THIS TIME BABY. That was 2014. It took a long time for me to find my writing again. I dedicated most of my energy to projects at @headspace, did a little freelance writing for @bicyclingmag and @runnersworldmag, consulted, failed miserably at writing a horror podcast (whoops), and then we moved and something shifted.
I started the weekly @shangrilogs newsletter in August, and earlier this week, Substack featured me on their What to Read series. My goal was to get 1000 subscribers by the end of the year. I haven’t quite done it – I’m at 931. But if we’re grading, that’s still an A, and this time I’m gonna celebrate it.
Thank you so much to every one of you who has shared this project on your stories and in your own newsletters - it truly means the world to me. I can’t wait to write more about backcountry skiing, avalanches, trail running, ghosts, mining history, tourists, home renovations, small town life, making friends, not making friends, and everything that’s come with this life shift. Love you all very, very much. (And if you’re not subscribed, you know, link in bio etc etc 😅)
