Here’s a quick love story... Between my right shoulder and the one arm handstand. 🤸🏽‍♀️ I’ve lost count of how many one arm handstands I’ve posted on here. But I don’t think I’ve ever shared about how it’s helped me solve chronic shoulder pain I struggled with for four years after a labrum repair surgery from my college volleyball days! ⬇️ For a long time after this surgery, my right shoulder STRUGGLED. It was unstable, mobility drastically decreased, my volleyball swing lost control, and it was often in pain... ESPECIALLY when sleeping. I pretty much slept on my left side for four years after the surgery, which did not help my sleep. 💤 But then... I got obsessed with one arm handstands. I started working on this project a few years ago, and I quickly noticed that it made my shoulders feel more stable than they ever had (figures, given you’re balancing your entire bodyweight on the shoulder joint) 😅 Eventually I started trying to sleep on my right side again, and noticed I could go longer and longer without pain. Fast forward to a couple years ago (one year into the one arm handstand project) and I can go the ENTIRE night sleeping on my right side absolutely pain free! 💪🏼 Following injuries, our brains can be “overprotective” of our bodies to ensure we don’t get injured again. Even long after we have healed, we can still be overly cautious and hesitant to move how we used to. A huge part of physical healing is not simply to get rid of your lingering pain, but also to prove to yourself that you CAN move freely again. I think taking on specific “movement projects” whether it’s handstands, a specific sport, or practice, is a great way reshape your mind and body following an injury.
