Matteo Pennesi and Luigi Monteanni met in high school for the first time. There they started their musical career with a live performance during a school occupation. Despite the fact that the gig didn’t go well, they kept on playing together and laid the groundwork for what is now @artetetra_records. Today they are a mathematician focusing on computational topology and a sociologist whose practice is geared towards musicology studying the connections between javanese REAK and metal. A variety of interests flows into their omnivorous project, drawing freely from exotica, world music 2.0 and field recordings, as well as computer music. With a practice that is very akin to improvisation, Babau investigates the idea of exoticism in the globalised world we live in, and tries to render the concept of transglobal digital folklore. They are portrayed inside the musical atelier, where they are often caught compromising their street credibility as they play Frédéric Chopin’s Walzers or Erik Satie’s Gymnopédie. Nonostante il gig non vada a buon fine, continuano a suonare insieme e gettano le basi per ciò che sarà @artetetra_records. Oggi sono un matematico e un sociologo, rispettivamente specializzati in topologia computazionale e in musicologia, con un focus sulle connessioni tra il REAK javanese e il metal. La molteplicità degli interessi di Matteo e Luigi confluisce in un progetto onnivoro che attinge con libertà dall’exotica, dalla world music 2.0 e dai field recordings, oltre che dalla computer music. La loro pratica indaga il concetto di esotismo nel contesto globalizzato del ventunesimo secolo e, attraverso un esercizio molto vicino all’improvvisazione, descrivono una forma di folklore digitale transglobale. Sono ritratti all’interno dell’atelier musicale, dove vengono spesso sorpresi a compromettere la propria street credibility mentre suonano i Valzer di Frédéric Chopin o le Gymnopédie di Erik Satie. #casadegliartistimilano #spaziolibero
