Abalone (aka mutton fish) has a long and rich history for palawa people here on trouwunna / lutruwita, particularly for women who have dived for them for thousands of years. Currently 96% of Tasmania’s abalone are exported overseas with 0% of profits going to First Nations people. Indigenous Quota Abalone is a wonderful initiative whereby First Nations people can wild harvest and sell their abalone to restaurants and the public alike, and in doing so, their mission is to employ and educate younger First Nations people. A sustainable and ethical industry that’s long overdue. Stay tuned for more about how + why this idea is so important and where you’ll be able to eat Indigenous Quota Abalone moving forward. Hopefully I’ll have some on sticks @farmgatemarket in the near future. Captured here is one of my fav ways to eat mutton fish, 📷 by the very talented @monsieurremi. Green lip braised w spices then wok fried w shiitake, fermented turmeric, ginger + garlic, fermented chilli, laksa leaf + lemon. Very good w a cold beer. #culturalfishery #culturalcatch #wildcatch #indigenousquota #palawa #pakana #SeaCountryFood #lsact #abalone #tasmanianabalone #lutruwita #trouwunna #tasmania
