We are filtering babies now. Filtering and photoshopping children and babies. And
It feels so delicate, this.
Like we are whispering in their ears about perfection.
About social media demanding perfection.
It feels like we are saying their faces
Could be better.
Their skin smoother.
Their stories, shinier.
And I worry.
Because children are sponges.
Already they are soaking in so much more than we realise,
With this social media world.
And isn’t it our job to help them navigate that,
Safely navigate that,
Even as we learn to navigate and protect ourselves?
I’m aware that I haven’t had my child yet.
And in the same way I don’t believe in shaming women who choose to edit their photos,
I don’t think we should judge parents who want their baby’s flaky skin removed,
Or their infant’s temporary birth bruise gone.
Maybe, when my time comes, I’ll want these things too.
I do feel uncomfortable about the filtering of the little girls — something I featured briefly in this video, but I’ve seen extensively on big accounts, huge accounts.
THAT feels very weird to me,
And even more complex, more dangerous.
For now, here, I just want to say
That I hope
I hope we don’t loose the messy chaos of childhood.
With all its tumbles and scrapes
And wild hair
And faces smeared with food.
I hope we capture and keep those moments too.
Imperfectly perfect and magical, just for being true.
