London, Milan, Paris, Leeds... A few months ago, I spent a day in the extraordinary M&S archive in Leeds. The retailer’s brilliant head of menswear design @karenhalldesign talked me through the new heritage collection (inspired by archive pieces and seen in today’s @theststyle) while Katie, keeper and protector of the archive, gave me the best history lesson I’ve had in years. There’s so much to learn there - not just about how the way we get dressed has evolved but about how we’ve changed and evolved too. From the food we eat, to the way we shop, to the way we communicate with each other. If you ever get the chance, go (and take your grandma: mine would have loved it). You’ve got to know the right people 😉 to be let loose in the archive but there’s a visitors’ centre that is open to the public.
