In hopes of documenting British Columbia’s famously shy and elusive sea wolves, @PaulNicklen and I hunkered down in a blind where the mouth of a wide forest river fed into the sea. We could hear signs of the wolves from time to time; the occasional howl and the unmistakable yapping of pups. But after days of sitting quietly, we hadn’t seen so much as a set of old paw prints in the sand. Just when I was about to give up hope, turning instead to the book in my lap, a commotion suddenly erupted at the edge of the forest. I peered across the river in time to see a mother wolf return to her cubs after a long day of foraging, stirring up a frenzy of joyful barking and wagging tails.
