Lost, missing, and “be-on-the-lookout” are words we have used to ask for your help in finding people and sadly sometimes to provide closure to families. Missing persons don’t always have the voice of a national park when they are lost. Today, we wear the Red Shawl for missing and murdered indigenous women and children. Red Shawl Day is a time to bring attention to the horrible acts of violence committed against indigenous peoples, particularly women and children. According to the Department of Justice, American Indian and Alaska Native women are missing and murdered at a rate of more than 10 times above the national average. Join the conversation, support the families, and help raise awareness by wearing red and learning more about #RedShawlDay. For more information see the Bureau of Indian Affairs Missing & Murdered Unit (MMU) – Operation Lady Justice and The Presidential Task Force on Missing and Murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives NPS Photo of Grand Teton National Park sign with red shawl which will be draped today Saturday, November 19 to raise awareness to our visitors.
