Jay and I have spoken openly about our coming out stories on our YT channel and for those who haven’t seen it, Jay outed herself at 16 years old to protect her gay cousin and was banished to Guatemala until she was “straight”. I came out in my early 20s to an understanding father and a disappointment mother. I was so stubborn and held a grudge against my mother for years because her reaction to my coming out wasn’t ideal. I battled with my ability to forgive her even when my mother was diagnosed with cancer. After she passed, that resentment turned into guilt for not forgiving her sooner. Coming out stories are never one size fits all. Often times, when you grow up as a minority the odds of our families accepting our “coming out” with open arms are also the minority. Hence, why we struggle with this day. It would be tone-deaf if we just left you with a beautiful moment and no context for the hell we had to go through to get to who we are today. We created this page to be a safe space and to be the representation we want to see more of in this world. A love that is as real on the camera as it is off. A place where we can be open about trauma and healing. A home that was built from scratch with you all, and is filled with a healthy love we never knew existed. We’re not trying to take away from the ability to celebrate today... all we are trying to say is, if your “coming out” was met with zero hardship then don’t take that for granted.
