So if I hadn’t had a bunch of dudes tell me to lift when I was in college, no one would’ve say anything to me. That’s pretty sad.
From my observations, it’s still far more acceptable and mainstream for Caucasian, African, and Latina women to have more muscular definition and normal amounts of body fat. If you go to China, Korea, and Japan, + other East Asian countries, you’ll still hear about weird shit like the “A4 paper challenge” (where you take a piece of printer paper and see if your waist is narrower than the paper. I know, wtf)... Eating disorders are more rampant on that side of the globe. Looking like a prepubescent teenager is still popular.
So @ my wonderful fellow Asian women, the work starts with you, on yourself, to shift towards a more positive body image.
It starts with you to be a role model for your own Asian female daughters and sisters and mothers and female friends. It starts with you to speak positively about your body as you look at your reflection.
Let them know by example that it’s okay and even cool to have a big ass that squats heavy.
Obviously, all of this stems from personal experience of not having a single Asian female role model as a child who wasn’t concerned with excessively shrinking and riding the cardio merry-go-round.
I’d like to see more Asian women who lift on this platform. I’d like to see more of them so that younger girls have women to look up to who also look like them.
I want this next generation of girls (of ALL ethnic backgrounds) to have as many strong role models as possible. Make it happen.
