Workers being fired without full pay and severance is a recurring problem in the garment industry.
Not only do brands push suppliers to accept low payments for production orders, which means suppliers do not have large stores of cash to dip into, but many production countries have social protection financing gaps.
Where national governments cannot cover unemployment compensation and benefits, we're asking brands to pay just #10CentsMore per t-shirt to ensure workers in their supply chain will not have to face wage-theft if their factory closes.
Garment workers are often enticed into signing worker contracts with low pay by the promise of large severance packages. The #10CentsMore that brands pay will go towards a severance guarantee fund, held separately from factory running costs, so that suppliers have enough money to pay their workforce the severance packages they were promised in their contracts.
