The Barbican complex, aka The Concrete Utopia, aka “London’s Ugliest Building” (voted 2003), aka one of my favorite stops on this whole trip. I know Brutalist architecture ain’t everyone’s cuppa tea but I happen to love it...even more when it’s paired with some utopian planning and lots of drapey greenery 🤩 The Barbican estate was built in London in 1965 as a forward-thinking living experiment after the destruction of WWII. The idea was to create new housing for young workers with the hope that they’d meet partners, build families, and live out life in an urban complex complete with water gardens, walkways suspended in the air connecting buildings, and lots of communal spaces for entertainment. Today it’s still a housing complex + arts center in the middle of London, but the apartments are now highly sought after - no mo’ young scrappy professionals living around here! (peep the Sir Thomas More references)
