I’m elated to announce that I will be teaching again for free starting in October. I don’t have mastery of anything, or some profound understanding of life or music but- I don’t need to in order to potentially give some nice encouragement and helpful perspectives. I have spent my entire life creating and studying music and for sure have some potentially helpful perspectives. From March 2021 to March 2022, every single week I taught 1-4 free one hour lessons via Zoom. It was a sublime joy and I can’t wait to start it up again. I teach: composition, arranging, harmony, orchestration, improvisation, music directing, career coaching, and approaches to self help related to a life in music. I do not teach absolute beginners or violin, viola, or piano. ****Please note that I will immediately end the zoom session if I feel that you are not sincerely trying to learn and simply signed up for the lesson to schmooze.**** A couple people have asked me why I teach for free. The short answer is that it’s super invigorating for me and makes me feel good to try and give back. The arts are not valued and supported enough in my opinion and this is my small way of doing something about that. It feels so good to take an hour out of my super demanding day and try to benefit someone else. It gives me a breather from my work and makes me feel like in some small way I’m contributing to the arts and humanity. It’s also super cathartic for me to (when appropriate) tell others things that I wished people told me/favorite things people told me spanning my 30yr professional career and 38yrs of playing music. Because of my busy schedule raising a family and doing all of the intense playing, recording, arranging, composing, producing, etc that I do, I don’t have the availability to teach any consistent ongoing weekly students. But! I do have the avail to give multiple lessons to the same person once every 3 months. Meaning, the most frequently that I can offer any one person a lesson is 1 lesson every 3 months.
